Artist Statement
I create watercolor, oil and encaustic paintings, specializing in landscapes, plants, and abstractions based on natural patterns and forms. Many paintings are inspired by my experiences and impressions traveling in the West and Midwest. Others spring directly ftrom my imagination, and still others find their inception in specific materials, techniques, or compositional approaches. I also enjoy creating improvisations which develop through a dialogue between my ideas and the whims of the medium.
Shape, texture, design and color are especially important to me. I prefer organic shapes to artificial, fractal geometry to Euclidean. Similarly I prefer textures formed by natural or random processes. While I do establish three-dimensional depth in many of my landscapes, they -- as well as the rest of the paintings -- are principally designed as two-dimensional relationships of shapes.
Any creative endeavor, whether it be writing a play, composing a symphony, or painting a picture, is a yin-yang-like dialog between design and serendipity, between logic and intuition, between left brain and right. To manage the interplay to achieve the best result in the most efficient way is a task which begins anew with each endeavor, and I look forward to the challenge with every painting.
It is my hope that these works will give the viewer a fresh look at some of the commonplaces which surround us, a moment of visual delight, and an increased appreciation of the inherent structure and beauty of the natural world.
